About IELTS Life Skill Exam
 
IELTS Life Skills test is different from the General Training IELTS and from the Academic IELTS, it only tests two skills, Listening and Speaking. It is intended mainly for people wanting to immigrate to the UK. At the time of writing this (21 February 2015) the new test was announced at the same time as changes to UK immigration requirements and on the official IELTS website it is linked specifically to the UK immigration, but in the future other countries might add the IELTS Life Skills test to their visa requirements.
 
IELTS Life Skills exam is designed is to test whether a person meets specific immigration requirements. As an IELTS Life Skills test taker, you only need to demonstrate your speaking and listening skills. There is no Reading or Writing section in IELTS Life Skills test and your Speaking and Listening skills will be assessed at the same time. IELTS Life Skills at CEFR Level A1 takes 16-18 minutes and Level B1 is 22 minutes and you need to take the test with another test taker and one Examiner. Your own performance on both speaking and listening will be assessed during this one session. You cannot take any break during the exam.
 
A certificated IELTS Examiner will assess your performance throughout the test based on the following 4 criteria:
 
1. Obtaining information
2. Conveying information
3. Speaking to communicate
4. Engaging in discussion
 
Your score and assessment would not be affected by the performance of the other test taker who is paired with you in the IELTS Life Skills test.
 
You will receive one copy of the IELTS Life Skills Test Report Form usually within 7 days of your test and you can take this test as many times as you want if you do not pass the exam. However, you need to register every time you sit for this test.
 
There are two main parts to IELTS Life Skills test
 
Part 1
 
In Part 1 candidate are expected to ask and answer questions on familiar topics.
 
Part 2
 
In Part 2 listening and speaking skills are tested at the same time.
 
A1 and B1 levels: candidates will listen to a task played on a CD. Completing the task allows them to show ability to listen for both the general meaning and detail.
 
Candidates need to say their answers (not write them down), although they can make notes on paper while listening to the CD.
 
Then there will be a discussion on a topic related to what candidates have listened to on the CD.
 
B1 level only : in addition to the tasks above there is also another task where one candidate plans an activity with the other candidate.
 
Note: the reason one candidate has to interact with the other is, IELTS Life Skills tests how well people can communicate with others in everyday English. The best way to test these skills is to put two test takers at a similar level of ability in a situation that allows them to show how well they can speak English to communicate and engage in discussion with others.
 
THERE ARE TWO MAIN PARTS TO IELTS LIFE SKILLS 
 
1. In the first part, you are expected to ask and answer questions on familiar topics.

3. At level A and level B, you will listen to a task played on a CD. Completing the task allows you to show your ability to listen for both the general meaning and detail.
4. You will say your answers, although you can makes notes on paper while you listen to the CD.
5. There will then be a discussion on a theme related to what you have listened to on the CD.
6. Additionally at B1 level, there is also a task where you plan an activity with the other candidate.

Syllabus of IELTS life skill test
 
The tasks in IELTS Life Skills are designed to reflect the everyday experience of communicating in an English-speaking country. You will be expected to take part in short discussions on everyday subjects including:
 
1. personal details/experiences
2. family and friends
3. buying goods
4. work
5. health
6. leisure
7. education/training
8. transport/housing
9. Weather.

Test Duration
 
For IELTS Life Skills you only need to attend one short session to complete the test. The times allowed for each level are:
 
1. IELTS Life Skills –  A1 Speaking and Listening 16–18 minutes
2. IELTS Life Skills – A2 Speaking and Listening 20 minutes
3. IELTS Life Skills – B1 Speaking and Listening 22 minutes.
 
Result factors of IELTS life skills test
 
The IELTS Life Skill test does not have any band score and has only two possible results: Pass or Fail. You will get a Test Report Form usually within 7 days that would denote whether you passed or failed in your test. If someone fails the test, s/he can’t use this Test Report for a visa application.

At each level, the test is designed to assess whether you can listen and respond, make your meaning clear, and talk with other people.

– communicate basic information, feelings and opinions on familiar topics
 
– talk with another person in a familiar situation about familiar topics.

– asking for information or descriptions

– listen and respond to spoken language, including straightforward information and narratives, and follow straightforward explanations and instructions.
 
– communicate information, feelings and opinions on familiar topics, using appropriate formality.
 
– talk with one or more people in a familiar situation, making relevantpoints and responding to what others say to reach a shared understanding about familiar topics.
 
In addition to the A1 tasks shown above, the B1 tasks may include:
 
– comparing
 
– showing contrast, cause, reason or purpose
 
– prioritizing
 
– planning
 
– persuading
 
– narrating
 
– asking about past or future events
 
– expressing future certainty or possibility
 
Test Results
 
Test results are available within 6 days of the test.
 
Fee of IELTS Life Skill Test
 
The current test fee is Rs. 12,070
 
When and where can I take an IELTS Life Skills test?
 
The tests are available throughout the world, in locations specified by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). You must confirm at the time of registration that you wish to use your test result for a UK visa application. You must sit the test in an ‘IELTS for UKVI’ test session, as UKVI will not accept results from all IELTS tests offered at these locations.
